Howth, Dublin Ireland 1/28
Our original plan for this weekend was to travel to the Cliffs of Moher. They are on the western coast of Ireland about a 4 hour bus ride from Dublin. Due to some poor choices of our flatmates we decided not to go to the Cliffs and thank goodness we didn't because we had a few friends who did go and they said the wind was so crazy that their phones flew out of their hands. I am plan on picking another weekend to go to the Cliffs of Moher because the sights are supposed to be amazing.
We didn't want to give up on the weekend though so we (myself, roommate Madalyn, and our Columbian friends Hannah and Gabby) traveled on train about 20 minutes to a small island near Dublin called Howth. We had heard amazing things and were itching to see more of the area we were living in. The train ride was short and the ride ended looking out on the sea. Walking into the town it was a coastal town with ships in the dock and seagulls flying over head. A small town with only two directions to head, we began the hike up the cobblestone path to loop around the island. The walk went from a cobblestone path to a dirt path to a muddy walkway winding up and through rocks and grass with a beautiful view out over the sea that was beyond blue.
We climbed and walked for about an hour or 2 and then began to head back down to search for some late lunch. On our way we bumped into a student we study with here at uni, Ondra who is from the Czech Republic who was just starting his climb up the cliff. We found a small pub/restaurant called the Upper Deck and all got fish and chips, they were by far the best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. Ondra came back from his hike and joined us, and even though it was a bit chilly we all went to grab ice cream and decided it was time to head back as it would be getting dark soon. I hope to head to Howth many more times before I leave Ireland, I loved the small town atmosphere and the hiking was so peaceful. Hopefully when the water and weather warms up we can all go cliff jumping. The weekend was not a bust.
On Monday we went to a class created just for us Erasmus students to learn Irish Dancing. I took Irish dancing as a kid but I had forgot everything I learned so it was a lot of fun and this time it was not solo Irish Dancing we were learning but how to dance in pairs, so it was like the Texas Two Step rendition in Ireland with Irish Dancing.
